Erie Press Scotch Yoke Forging Press

When you’re working at the high end of forging tonnage, the difference between a good press and the right press comes down to precision under load, consistency over time, and a drive mechanism you can trust. The Erie Press Scotch Yoke was built with exactly that in mind, and it’s been proving itself on floors like yours for generations.

Product Overview

Engineered for Heavy-Duty Performance

Available from 500 to 12,000 tons, the Erie Press Scotch Yoke forging press is one of the most capable mechanical forging presses on the market. Whether you’re running high-volume production or tackling complex forgings that push the limits of your current equipment, this machine delivers.

The Scotch Yoke Difference

Erie’s exclusive Scotch Yoke drive is what sets this press apart from conventional eccentric or crank designs. The Scotch Yoke drive delivers uniform forging pressure throughout the stroke, which translates directly to more consistent parts and significantly better handling of off-center loads.

If you’re dealing with asymmetric parts or multi-cavity dies, that’s not a small thing. Off-center loading is where a lot of presses start to show their weaknesses. The Erie Scotch Yoke press for off-center loads can handle that stress without the deflection you’d see elsewhere.

The compact nature of the Scotch Yoke design also allows for a lower frame height, which means greater rigidity. And a stiffer, more stable press is a more accurate press.

Built for High Tonnage, Built to Last

This is a high-tonnage Scotch Yoke forging machine, and every component reflects that. The steel frame features extra-large cross-sections, and the extra-wide forged steel eccentric is engineered to maximize rigidity while keeping shaft deflection to a minimum.

A few things that stand out:

  • Full-Length Adjustable Guides keep the ram stable and true throughout the forging stroke, which directly translates to tighter tolerances and more consistent part quality.
  • Band-Type Brake with 3 Sections can be reversed to equalize wear, a practical design detail that extends service life and reduces maintenance headaches.
  • Alloy Steel Spur Gearing simplifies both assembly and ongoing maintenance, which matters when you’re running a demanding production schedule.
  • Pressure Lubrication System continuously lubricates, cools, and cleans all critical working parts, keeping everything running clean even under sustained heavy loads.
  • Larger Windows make this press readily compatible with automated forging line equipment, so if you’re running or planning to run automation, the Erie Scotch Yoke fits the picture.

Frequently Asked Questions: Erie Press Scotch Yoke

What makes the Scotch Yoke drive different from other mechanical press designs?

Most mechanical forging presses use a crank or eccentric drive. The Erie Scotch Yoke drive delivers more uniform forging pressure across the stroke and handles off-center loading better than conventional designs, which means less deflection, more consistent parts, and less stress on the machine over time.

Can the Erie Press Scotch Yoke be customized for my operation?

Yes. While the press comes well-equipped as standard, there’s a solid range of options, from shut height adjustment wedges to automated conveyor packages, that can be configured to fit your line. If your requirements go beyond that, Ajax/CECO/Erie Press can custom-engineer a solution around your needs.

What kind of support can I expect after the press is installed?

A dedicated project manager stays with your project through installation, and the relationship doesn’t end there. Ajax/CECO/Erie Press provides staff training, detailed maintenance documentation, customer-specific PM programs, and ongoing remote support whenever you need it.
